'always on' - please explain

Hi, im trying to get my head round this,

I left my Hero connected to the mobile internet overnight and disabled 'always on' and when I checked netcounter this morning it said I'd downloaded 180kb. What would that be for?

I have the twitter widget, the clock that shows the weather and gmail is set up to sync every 15 minutes - but why would these update if I've disabled 'always on'?

Also, under data synchronization settings what does 'enable background data usage' do?

Thanks

Disable Mobile Network under Menu > Settings
After you disable Hero will not use your operator for connecting to your network.
If you have a WiFi, it is advised to use it and enable the auto sleep on idle...
Hope this is what you are seeking, else phrase you question appropriately...

If GMail is set to sync every 15 minutes then its obviously gonna consume a little bit of data. 180kb is nothing. The step above should do the trick if you are worried.
