Amazon App eating mobile data

The Amazon app has started eating about 4-5MB of background mobile data a day, even though I am not using the actual app at all. It's used about 62MB of my monthly allowance since July 24th and it's all background data according to my data stats. I know I can turn background data off but this is a global setting which will affect other apps. I can't find any setting in the Amazon app to allow me to alter this behaviour but I don't really want to have to delete the app as it can be useful at times. Anybody else had this problem, or can suggest a solution?

Have you tried signing out of the app until you want to use it, or even going into settings and disabling the app temporarily?

That is odd behavior for the Amazon app. I've had it on my phone forever and have never had it act like that. Possibly uninstall and reinstall to see if that straightens things out?

Hi androidmog :)

Since your thread isn't about a device-specific issue, I moved your thread to the Android Apps forums for better exposure. Hopefully more users of the Amazon App Store will be able to chime in here.

If you have a recent version of Android you should be able to go into settings > data usage > Amazon > and check "restrict/disable background data". This is not global, and will only stop the Amazon app using background data. I got most things checked for disable background data, except for the apps that do actually need it, like WeChat IM.

I'm running stock 4.3. When I try to do what you suggest, I get a pop up message " this feature may stop apps that depend on background date working when Wi Fi is not available. You can find more appropriate data usage controls in the individual app settings", which is why I assumed it was a global setting. I tried signing out of the app before disconnecting from my WiFi, but after two hours connected to mobile data only the app had used another 4.5MB. I'm going to uninstall and re install and see what happens. Thanks for the tips so far.

I'm sure that's just a general warning that you may see in case you do break something. I'm pretty sure that nothing else depends on the Amazon app having background data available to it. Its purpose is to show you things that you can buy from Amazon, it doesn't need to be in the background consuming cellular data when you're not using it. You can quite safely uninstall it completely and then just browse and shop the Amazon mobile site with a browser.

Same here, 32Mb data in 2.5 weeks.
Also noticed that under the Amazon app setting there's a check box for Collect App Usage Data that allows Amazon to track your app usage and frequency!

I have no spare space on my Victory anyway so I might as well just delete the Appstore.
(Will my amazon apps still work, I wonder?)
