Amazon App Store Thread - Daily Free Apps

Wow, I guess not having parenthesis *is* a notable omission, but still... heck, in my day, a calculator had four functions and 8 LED (not LCD) digits, and the most advanced thing you could do with it was turn it upside down and giggle at "b00b135".

For the dev's sake, I hope it's true that "there's no such thing as bad publicity".

Not many Amazon apps are "worth" being free... I've used this calculator for a year now and still like it better than others.

I did download yesterday's Mahjong Artifacts, but can't read any of the text, or instructions (and I have a 5" screen!)... I guess you need a 10" tablet to figure it out.

lol new free apps are SOOOO bad now.

They used to give away the best apps and I got some good ones too.

Now it's all 6 year old games. wow.

Yes, I'm not one to look the gifthorse in the mouth, but I think it's reasonable to expect a modicum of quality given how Amazon pushes their give away as a reason to use their store.

I think just as big of a problem as bad apps is that many devs don't update their apps in the Amazon store. The Android Market version gets updates and they just leave the old version to rot on the Amazon market. I must easily have 10-15 apps like that.

I'm having nothing but trouble with the Appstore app, blowing through an inordinate amount of battery for no reason.

This was taken after I killed the app in settings, and charged it for a few. Needless to say, I am seriously considering deleting it altogether. My hope is to be able to install the occasional giveaway that interests me via sideloading, until they fix it. Do I have any alternatives to using their appstore proper?

Since I'm rooted, I would delete it using Titanium, and then restore it when there's actually a good app to grab. That hasn't happened in a while...

Alternatively, I wonder if you can add the App o'Day to your Amazon account from the website? Once you've "purchased" it, it'll be available to whatever phone you're using, so maybe that's the workaround.

My phone doesn't report Amazon using battery, FWIW (LG Optimus T).

You absolutely can add it via the website. I do it almost daily as a way of "holding" rights to an app that I may later find useful. Some I know I'll never use, so I skip doing this on those days.

Amazon.com: Appstore for Android

Yeah, the battery tracking comes with ICS, so that's how I know. :) I've been using the website to "purchase" them (to avoid using the app), so I'll check and see if I can download directly from it.

I go and check the website for the free one and 'purchase' it if I want it (and then usually download to the app once I am home on WiFi. The only thing is, I believe any app purchased through Amazon (whether it was the daily free or you actually bought it) needs to have Amazon Appstore installed on the device so that the app will run. I know this to be the case for WeatherBug, a few times I uninstalled (or maybe logged out of) Amazon Appstore and WeatherBug gave me a message saying it couldn't verify me, reinstalled Appstore and then all was good. Not sure if permanent freebies do this as well.

You are correct in that it has to be on my device. I'm, hoping to just avoid opening it. If I can't, then I'll likely just write off the few apps from it that I use.

I had seen the amazon appstore using high CPU frequently last week. I cleared data and cache for that app and it seems to have been a lot better since.

Also, what's up with amazon appstore notifications? The most recent version allows you to turn off notifications, but I'm still getting them. Did it only turn off notifications of updates, not notifications of new apps? Very confused.

Poorly coded app for sure.

Plus, in order to run an app you get from amazon appstore, you are required to keep the appstore app on the phone.

As an update, I thought I'd post how I'm currently dealing with it. I went back and installed (which was an issue in itself) Watchdog Task Manager that Amazon gave away last year. In trying to install Watchdog, the app seemed to refuse to install whenever I selected that option, instead returning to the list of 280-something apps. Before going up bed, I opened their Appstore again and turned off the screen. When I woke up, it was ready to install; I have no idea how long it took to get to that point. Back to the original point though, I set it up this morning (after having already force stopping the Appstore after installing Watchdog), and once Watchdog got the numbers it was indicating that the Appstore was using 28% of the CPU. Needless to say, I was ninja quick to blacklist that sucker.

As an aside, I know that this would be easier to manage if I were rooted which would enable me to freeze it, but after having exchanged phones on each model I've owned (including this one), I'm not excited at the prospect of unrooting in order to be able to exchange my device for another.

A bit off topic, but why bother unrooting? If you're giving it to another person, you're giving them a better device (though I'd probably go and configure Superuser to "deny all" and uninstall anything that could get the recipient in trouble). If you're returning it to the store, they're going to do a complete wipe, so surely they don't care if you're running Angry Birds or Titanium Backup?

I don't care about selling/ giving away handsets that are rooted, I just worry about taking it back. After having dealt with Asurion for one of those, I worried a lot about getting tapped for the cost of the device. Maybe it's a scare tactic on their part, but I'd rather be safe (watchdog) than sorry.

The last phone I sold the buyer actually told me that he was searching specifically for a Droid that was already rooted and mine was the only one which is why I sold it so fast when there were like a dozen for sale on CL. I mean, to the average person who doesn't have the desire to root themselves they would be the ones paying someone else to root it for them so why not buy the one already rooted? Saves them time, effort and money.

You guys and your fancy new toys. I always use my phones until they're worn to a nub, and/or so obsolete that nobody would want it. Somewhere, I think I've still got an analog headset that's being held together with electrical tape. It looks like it's got a black headband, so my kids called it Dad's Ninja Phone.
