how do you download the free app when you get the notification ? when i click on the notification it does nothin

Just open the appstore, go to menu/my apps, and click "Update available".

Make sure you have your phone set to allow "Unknown Sources"...

Not sure how you were able to download the Appstore app if it's USA only. If you got "notifications" that tells me you have it installed. You might look at this thread if you're not USA.

I get update notifications from Amazon all the time, then I don't have anything to update when I go into the app. I have been assuming that these updates are for apps that I downloaded but no longer have installed. Can anyone confirm that?

Amazon App Store remembers all your purchases/downloads. So maybe you downloaded apps from Amazon on another device and it's telling you that they are available to download on your current device? Also, whenever I get a notice that an update is available, the app usually opens to the front page of the App Store, rather than the My Apps section. Be sure to open the menu and check My Apps to see what's available and what needs to be updated.
