Help Amount of phone charge lost on startup

johkaz

Newbie
Hi,

I am wondering if there is a reason why on my Galaxy Ace 2 (Android version 4.1.2) i lose so much of the charge on phone startup?
As i charged the phone to 100% when it was off, but after startup the charge in the battery dropped to 93%.

Gary

Does it do it all the time?

Charge level is always a best guess and to prolong battery life, a lot of phones will actually report 100%, when it's anything up to 5% lower.

It might well be it wasn't quite 100% to begin with?

Hi,

Yes it does do it all the time, no matter how long i leave the charger on after the battery symbol shows 100%.
And after switching the phone on and charging it again, it goes to 100% after about 2 to 5 minutes.

My phone does exactly the same thing, I even bought a brand new battery of the same mAh and it's still the same.

Have you also noticed that if you charge the battery while the phone is still on and check the % occasionally, when mine gets to around 93%, a min or so later I check and it will report it as being fully charged 100%, so it looks like the phone thinks that 93% is the fullest it can be charged.

I wonder if replacing the battery with a high capacity kind say 2450mAh instead of the 1500 mAh that came with the phone... will it make any difference I wonder?

PS

By the way, can I ask, has your phone ever switched off while in sleep mode all by itself while having plenty of battery charge remaining? what I mean is you go check your phone first thing in the morning for example and find it is off completely.

Hi,

Yes i too have noticed that as soon as the charge gets to about 93%, it seems to spike and suddenly end up at 100%. And it takes next to no time to go back down to the low 90% within minutes of taking it off charge.

With regards to the 2450mAh High Range batteries, i have heard bad things about them, such as fire risks through overheating, they are smaller normal batteries just re-labelled and some phones do not recognise them. So i would prefer to stick to the proper Samsung batteries.

Like I say it's 1500 Mah, it's a PDA battery, not Samsung, so far it's been fine, I bought it really to see if it sorted out that sleep mode switching itself off issue.

I don't think I will bother with any high capacity batteries just to be safe.

So it would seem that the battery charge issue that you reported is not just with your phone, it would seem to be an issue with this brand of phone itself.

Although the battery that I purchased says it is for the i8160 model I have noticed that it is just very slightly thicker therefore just one little part of the phone doesn't fully click, but I think that when I put my gel cover on it then pulls it all together.

Hi,

One thing i have noticed that you may have in common with me, is that we are both on Virgin Media as the provider. This may seem silly... But I have the Mobile Rescue setup as an insurance on my phone, and it has the two arrows on the top bar there all the time. I am wondering if this is eating up the battery, whilst it is sitting there waiting to be activated?

As i did not realise at first what it was, and no matter what i tried i could not shut it down. And when i did (i can't remember how now), it came straight back up after i restarted the phone up.

Sorry if this seems strange, but i am a Luddite that has been dragged into the 21st century by my wife who said i need a mobile phone...

Hi,

Yes I know exactly what you mean as I used to have that mobile rescue installed too, but since I went back to factory settings I didn't bother installing it again.

Regarding the icon at the top, I am pretty sure there is a setting from within the rescue app that if you untick it will remove the icon on the status bar.

As I don't have that app on my phone at present I don't think that could be your issue of it causing a charging issue, I could be wrong though.

Let me know how you get on removing that icon tho as you don't need it for the rescue to work.

I'm not sure if mine has always been like this, but when you go into the apps is your google settings icon grey? I could have sworn that mine was green before. Can you have a look and confirm?

It's ok, I read on another forum that the icon has indeed been changed from green to an ash colour.

I was just wondering why google have changed the colour in the first place, not that it's a big issue or anything but would it be saving power being ash instead of green perhaps?

The charge issue although I have the same issue I can say that this doesn't affect every phone of the same as someone I know who has the same phone has their charge go slowly up to 100% but they are on Gingerbread so perhaps it is a Jellybean issue.

Just wanted to point out on this thread that I have a new Samsung battery, same 1500mAh, and this issue reported here still is the very same.

The reason I purchased another battery as the previous one I got wasn't an original Samsung, but this newer one is.

I am disappointed in this phone if I am to be honest, and if my other issue with it turning off by itself occurs again with this new Samsung battery I will be contacting Virgin to ask for a replacement new phone or perhaps a newer model as this one has been a nightmare.

Can I ask the OP, are you still having the issue you reported, and if so have you contacted the carrier about it?

Hi,

Yes, i am still having the problem with losing the percentage of battery on start up.
This is on an original Samsung battery that came with the phone, and 'touch wood' i don't have the shut down problem.
I have not contacted Virgin about it, as i suspect that it is just something with the phone or battery to make it work like that.

Hello,

When you say startup, are you meaning turning the phone on from scratch after it has supposedly fully charged?

I ask as if you do mean this then you could always try charging with the phone on or just idle, and then see if you still lose some percentage.

Also want to ask, do you use the option that lets you see the percentage of battery all the time on top of the status bar?

Hi,

I have tried it both in Switched Off mode (large battery icon in the centre) when charging to 100%, i then switch the phone on and then check the charge and it is usually between 93% and 95%. Plus with the phone on and in Idle mode charged to 100%, i let the phone go back into Idle mode, and generally when i go back into active mode the charge has dropped to between 95% and 93%.

I use an app on the home screen called Battery Widget, to show what battery charge is left. Even when i have used the option in the status bar, it shows the same as the battery widget.

This new Samsung battery is strange too, it appears to be going down in 3's, it was at 71% for a good wee while, and I thought that it was holding a charge longer than previous batteries, then next time I looked not long after it showed as 68%.

I suppose if the switching off all by itself while in idle mode is no longer then I wont worry too much.

I did read somewhere that these batteries require to be formatted which I take it means letting it go right down to zero so the phone does indeed switch off, then charge it to full, and do this 3 times, haven't done this with this one, perhaps I should.
