I find that the data speed when my phone is hotspot and tethered to my laptop is not much better then dial up speed. Is there something that can be done about this? Os win7 home 32bit on the laptop.

i don't think there is much of anything that can help the speed.
i think it is limited by the phones network connection.

Bad signal?
Not sure because mine works great tethered
What are you using to tether?

when was the last time you"cleaned" the temp files and registry on your laptop?
find a good cleaner and maintenance program and use it regularly.
i use "TweakNow PowerPack 2012" as it cleans the HDD,temp folder,registry and will defrag the registry too
