Forget what NASA has to say about living in space and on other planets, they do not know much I think. We will learn just how clueless these scientists are when we start building condos on mars. They will quickly learn just how much they do not know.

Hell, it took them a long time to finally discover that Pluto is not a planet. These days, NASA will likely redefine the sun as as a planet and they will start landing humans on the sun.

I think Ben Bova had a pretty good scenario for settlements on Mars (his novel). It also would depend on a true geological profile. If there's a lot of money to be made, someone will gamble.

We humans love money and profit. We also want to know what is out there. This will never change. No matter what happens on Earth, we simply have no ability to not try to see what is over the next mountain or across the next ocean. It is part of who we are.
