Help Anddroid 4.4 text message error when i send a text message using 3rd party text app

gizmotab

Lurker
I have a Nexus 5 (my first smartphone) and use Ting's ISP service (which runs on Sprint).
From Sprint I get error 9230 with Msg. 2114 when I use TextSecure to text people whose phone numbers I originally entered as 7 digit in my contacts. Error 9230 says to resend using a 10-digit number.

A 2011 fix for an earlier version of Android was posted in abdrioidforums by knicholson1 in response to outkast25.
However, it relied on working with the Dialer app and other moves to delete cloud stored original 7-digit numbers.
Android 4.4 Kitkat does things differently. There is no longer a Dialer app.

Note that deleting a contact, creating a new entry under a different name while using the same phone number (entered originally as 7 digits) in a 10-digit version, does not work.

I have called support at both Google and Ting and got no fix, though both representatives had me try stuff (like clear cache), none of which worked. The reps were unfamiliar with the issue.
Moreover, since I can text with Hangouts, the default app, they consider this a nonissue or a problem of 3rd party apps.

I hope someone has the knowledge of Android that lets them tell me a fix.
TextSecure sends encrypted texts to other TextSecure users. I would like to be able to use it.

It sure sounds like a TextSecure problem. It's going to use the same infrastructure to send the text as the rest of the phone (voice and text apps) does, so it has to comply with the same rules they do. (The only difference is that the message it sends is a bunch of garbage to anyone who doesn't have the key to decode it - which other people using TextSecure have.) It wold be like not using all 10 digits if you were making a voice call, but using a language only you and your caller understood. The system doesn't care about the message, it cares about how to determine where it's going.

As an aside, ALL phone numbers should be entered into a cellphone (in North America) as 10 digit numbers. Unlike some landlines, dialing the area code you're in doesn't cause a problem. Also, the "1" doesn't have to be put in because with North American cellphones, all numbers are assumed to be North American (which is what the "1" means) numbers. But if you dial a 7 digit number, and you're not physically in the same area code that your phone's number is in, you'll get a message (they vary with the carrier) to the effect that you have to dial all 10 digits. Are you calling the area code you're in, or the area code your phone's from? The system can't make that decision, you have to by using the area code.

Contact TextSecure at support@whispersystems.org and see if they can fix their app. The problem is probably in the code that gets the number from your contacts. (It shouldn't try to send to a 7 digit number if the localization is North America, it should give you an error message. But it should pick up all 10 digits of a 10 digit number.)
