I moved over from Virgin Mobile to MetroPCS about a week ago. I'm on the $30 250Mb 4G, then unlimited everything else plan. I was thinking that 250 MB should be close to what I use a month, since on VM I would average 200MB-300MB per month (mostly streaming Pandora), so I thought at worst I wouldn't hit my limit until day 25 or so of the month. I hit it on Day 6.
In looking at my data usage, the culprit seems to be Android OS. I have tried to fix this by doing the following (I'm rooted btw):
I am on Wifi at home and at work, so it is pretty much just my commute where I use data. Today I drove to work, used Pandora (data usage shows up as expected), with nothing else to my knowledge running, and somehow Android OS has already used 18.66 MB
At that rate, I would get 13 days with 4G at best. My previous phone was a Motorola Triumph running CM 7.2 (Gingerbread) with the same accounts/apps/etc, so my thought is that there has to either be something in ICS that is causing the OS to use the extra data or just something weird with my phone.
Any ideas for things to check or possibly any apps/methods that could give me more detail about the "Android OS" data usage (process names, IP/URL being hit, etc)? I'm pretty comfortable with most android things (command line, adb, etc), so feel free to throw out any suggestions. Having to pay attention to data usage is kind of new to me, so I don't really know the proper tool set to use.
Thanks for the help.

- Only syncing Gmail, Contact and Calendars for Google accounts (all of which show up in separate categories in data usage anyway
- Turned off "Backup my Data" in Backup & Restore
- Turned off auto-update in Play store (it shows up separately as well)
- Installed and setup Ad-Away.
- Turned off/disabled Google+, Google Talk, and pretty much all other Google stuff except for Gmail
- Turned off/disabled all of the MetroPCS apps
