Android 4.3: Gesture or Other Alternatives to "Back" Button?

PeteCress

I'm moving from an 8013 Samsung 10" tablet to the 2014 successor: an SM-P600.

On the 8013, Home, Back, and Menu were grouped close together where one could press them with the left hand's thumb.

Now Home is a hard button in the center and the Menu and Back soft buttons are about an inch to either side. Unreachable via either thumb. Non-ergonomic IMHO.

The Question: Is there an app or something that provides "Back" functionality - either from some configurable button on the screen or via some gesture?

Yeah you can check out the Pie Control app or if youre rooted, theres an Xposed module that lets you swipe in from the edge of the screen to go back.
I have the nav bar hidden on my tab and use LMT Pie for navigation. I think LMT is root only

Thanks!

I'm in the process of deciding which root method to use, so I guess I will wait until that is out of the way.is done.

Do you know the author names for LMT Pie and/or Pie Control? The PlayStore has five different apps that could be the right one.

Authors: CoolAce, H_Zee13, and EatHeat. Does any one of those sound familiar?

The Pie Control app i use on my phone is by Coolace.
LMT isnt on play so google search for a download on XDA.
To me, LMT is the best for the basic navigation controls (but the settings are pretty confusing).
Did u get the tab rooted then?

Yes. Used autorootp600mj4.tar.MD5 and stockrecoverymj4.tar.md5 via a USB cable and Odin 3.09.

Was going to say that I will try LMT first - but now that I'm looking at it, it looks like an alternative launcher and I am already using Nova Launcher.... and don't have any brain cells to spare moving to another....

So it's on to PIE.

Nah the name LMT Launcher is misleading mate.
Its not a launcher. I use Nova Prime launcher on all my devices

Same here with Nova Prime.

I installed LMT.

I can get to the setup page, and I can make the pie pop out when I touch the margin. But when I select one of the Level 1 options that I defined ("Back", "Camera", and "FX File Explorer" on the pie nothing happens. Ditto with only one button defined ("Back").

I'm thinking that LMT is not quite working yet for 4.3 on a 2014 Samsung 10" tablet (SM-P600).

Or could this be User RCI?

I found it complicated to set up so i just use the default first level.
Hmm i dont know if it should work on TW or not mate. I use it on a nexus tab. Did you grant LMT superuser?
Have you tried Pie Control?

Yes.. but I suspect you nailed it with it not working on a TouchWiz machine.

I guess Pie Control is next.
