This is probably old news, but with the release of Android 4.3, there is a new option in the Advanced section of the Wifi settings called "Scanning always available".
While this doesn't seem like much, it does mean you can roughly work out your location using Wifi, without using all the battery drain of having Wifi on max, always trying to find somewhere to connect to.
So it's a quick and dirty way to get Wifi location, and saving a little battery life.
What does this mean for Tasker? Well I for one use it, to turn full Wifi on/off based on my location. That way, while I'm out of the work office, or away from home, my Wifi isn't trying to connact to all those open Wifi hotspots. You'll have to up the distance threshold a little (I use 500m), but it works a treat. Also means you could save some battery life, if you use GPS (unless you want that level of accuracy, or have location based outside of built up areas)
