Android 5.1 Factory Image for Nexus 2012 is here!

I've had a similar experience. On 5.0.2 my Nexus 7 (2012) was almost unusable. Tremendous lag between apps, increased load times, etc., etc. (even after a FDR). Since the upgrade I did last night to 5.1 (with no FDR) , I can immediately recognize a difference. It's still a tad sluggish in my humbled opinion (but it is three years old). I'm excited to really put it through the ringer and see what else I can find out...but definitely an improvement.
 
Got 5.1 OTA today on my original Nexus 7. Was running Ok, maybe a little slow, on 5.0.2. Have never done a Factory Reset.

Did factory reset and things ARE faster!

I got the 5.1 OTA and after that it was laggy. After wiping the cache partition through recovery it working much better. So, if you do get the OTA you very well might need to wipe the cache partition.
 
my other Nexus 7 just got prompted for the update I just powered it up when I got in after work. the second batch of Google OTA's for N7's must be out now today ;)
 
Gave it a quick spin this evening - was a bit laggy whilst doing a few updates but it's more than usable. Compared to the M8 it's slow, but I'm happy

I also received the 5.1 OTA. Is there a way to wipe the Cache without being Rooted?

I believe that you can wipe /cache in the stock recovery (no root required).

Edit: Instructions for the Nexus 6, but it should be the same on any Nexus device:

This will remove any temporary files that may be causing the problem, but will not delete your files or settings.

  1. With the phone powered off, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time until the device turns on.
    You will see the word "Start" with an arrow around it.
  2. Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "Recovery mode"
  3. Press the Power button to restart into Recovery mode.
    You'll see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark and the words "No command."
  4. While holding down the Power button, press the Volume Up button.
  5. Use the volume buttons to scroll to "wipe cache partition" and press the Power button to select it.
  6. "Reboot system now" will be highlighted, press the Power button to select it.

flashed the factory image and still getting lag performance issues.....WiFi problem is fixed. Thinking since I flashed doing a factory reset won't help anything.. Am I right? Any suggestions for the lag? Already wiped cache partition once.

Is it lagging everywhere in the UI or just when using / switching between certain apps?

You could maybe try booting into Safe Mode to see if the lag persists when using only the pre-installed applications.
 
yep those two culprits (FB & Chrome) are a known issue for some users. I don't download facebook onto my 7 but I do use Chrome constantly it lags a little but I can live with it.
there is a lite version of Facebook that may help

BTW perhaps if your Lappy experiencing 100% cpu usage prolly it bcos the Pepperflash

disable that by type > about:plugins > hit enter > click "+" to open details
disable flashplayer (1) - Pepperflash and use Normal flash only.

From what I read. Facebook lite sucks... Seriously why do I need to mess with chrome settings either... So.. Gonna do a factory reset... If that doesn't fix it.. I'm going back to kit Kat... It's just not worth the aggravation anymore.
 
My 2012 is still slow after doing a factory reset - multi-tasking such as downloading updates and trying to open any app just slows it down - typically at least 2 second delay between pressing a button and something happening

Do I just accept that this is the best it's going to get? or is there something seriously wrong?
 
The 2012 N7 is starting to show its age, but mine still keeps up with my N9 surprisingly well. I do experience lag when on the forum's I frequent while posting with voice to text for the most part. Otherwise its pretty snappy.
How many 3rd party apps do you have installed? Also Nexus tablets seem to slow down when you get the memory almost full or around full...

Minimum number of apps installed.. Yet I just experienced a very long freeze up on this site... Not looking promising..
 
How does this tablet do with games like minecraft or skylanders? My kids play those and other games, and watch videos, don't need chrome or Facebook. Ordered a refurb for 90 from Newegg and just trying to decide if I should take the updates to lollipop or try to stay on kit Kat, since the os updates won't matter for my kids. What do you think?
 
Got the tablets, one came with 4.3, which includes the automatic trim feature that is supposed to help this tablet so much, so I left it. The other took a while before it would turn on, thought maybe the charging plug wasn't working, but eventually it came alive and now has no trouble charging. It came with 4.2, and was not much but a little bit slower than the other, so I upgraded it to 4.3. Both are running great now, don't see any reason to upgrade further and risk slowing them down. Maybe 4.4, but no rush. I'm willing to pay more for my own tablet (eyeballing the new Asus models coming soon), but for the kids, these are great @ $90 on Newegg.
