I thought Android was Ubuntu with Google's patented name. Whats different between the two? Can Ubuntu for cell phones be obtained and installed in the same way as its desktop version?

Android and Unbuntu have nothing to do with each other except that they are both operating systems based on Linux. Differences between them are vast, far more than I have the time or inclination to go into here. In the simplest terms, Android is a Linux distribution for mobile devices and Unbumtu is a Linux distribution for desktops and laptops.
Really, for answers to your question, Google is your friend.
You cannot download Unbuntu and install it on a phone like installing it on a computer.
Both are based on the Linux kernel, but that's about where the connection between the two ends.
Ubuntu is just one of many desktop linux distributions. Android is linux kernel plus a low-overhead runtime environment (generally the Java-based Dalvik VM, but moving now to ART), and without the native X support and many of the libraries and applications you'd expect from a linux distribution.
There were a couple of projects to port ubuntu onto specific phones. Not read much about them for a while though. Canonical announced their own push to officially support an Ubuntu version for phones last year, but it's gone very quiet since then. You'll notice that that site doesn't include any download links or installation instructions, just PR talk about the project.
