Android App - hardware support

Does anybody have information or experience in using external hardware plugged in to the 3.5mm audio jack on an android?

I know you can use the jack for video-out (at least on my captivate), but I'm wondering if the Android API has functions and classes that allow you to plug in a piece of hardware to that jack and interface over it, and if so what other considerations would need to be made?

I don't think android supports it, even phones with HDMI out have had issues with using the HDMI out

It's not a part of the API that I'm aware of. The API tends not to deal with specific hardware implementations and instead attempts to abstract them away to the lowest common denominator.

NFC is a bit of an exception though, since Google wants to be a mobile bank in the future, so they're pushing that one hard.
