Android app location

So I'm aware that (currently) all apps installed on the droid are stored on the internal memory and not the SDcard.
I've found that the apps built into the ROM are stored under system/app but where are the ones installed by the user stored? One person told me data/app but when I navigate to this folder, it's empty. Any idea. Also, where are settings for apps stored?

/data/app is where all mine are. What are you using to look there? I see my apps just fine using root explorer

You either do not have root access or the application you are using to view the directory does not have rot access.
