Android app upgrade/permissions oddity

So I have the Kindle app installed but when it prompted me to upgrade, I did not as I was not happy with the new access-to-accounts permission it was requesting. So far so OK. This was a couple of months ago.

Now, my understanding, which seems is somehow mistaken, apps are either set not to auto update, set to auto-update, require no new permissions and do auto-update or set to auto-update, but require new permissions and will not auto-update without user intervention.

Last night, I got a notification that Kindle had updated. By my understanding above, this should not have happened. Can anyone explain what's going on?

Also, does anyone have an old version of the apk without the permission? I think it came with the phone (Droid Maxx) so I think I should just be able to remove the new version and it will roll back?

Think I worked it out.

Went through the OS upgrade a few weeks ago. This apparently pushed the Kindle version up to one with the included permissions. For whatever reason, the Kindle app didn't upgrade straight away (not sure what the logic is there. My own published apps seem to upgrade randomly also). So when it was time for the upgrade, it went through.

Looks like the factory version is now 3.8.2.4. I am rooted so I may see about finding an older APK and downgrading (is there a good source for that?). It does bring up some interesting issues with full OS upgrades and permissions. In theory, app providers could slip in some quite nasty stuff people weren't expecting.
