If this were something that was unintentional, not only would it have been patched in a firmware update within hours, it would have never made its [...]

A little food for thought here. I personally have an HTC Evo 4G of the slightly older version hardware so it is really easy to root however I have refrained from doing this as of right now. The reason about this to come. I have not played with a rooted phone but I would have to guess it is something like enabling the Root User in Linux Ubuntu - Which I use every day as my primary system!!! Many people who really understand Linux actually advice against using "root" user constantly because one can create huge problems for their system if they do if you do not know what you are doing. When you have an easy rooting process people who can punch the command in can easily enable root user which is capable of overclocking processor and other inner workings of android. Overclocking for example if done improperly just like on a computer can lead to blowing your processor because you do not understand what you are doing. I see the default disable of Root user to be beneficial for the regular user who does not understand what they are doing, protecting them from burning out the processor or erasing half of the operating system when they are messing around with things they do not understand.

Now that I am a lot more familiar with terminal and Linux (I also took some courses in college about linux command) I understand a lot of what is happening as the commands are executed. I also keep a nice backup of my system for when I do something stupid when I am not thinking and enter the commands mindlessly as I have done 2 times in the past. This I do not want to happen to my Evo so I just keep myself from having to imply the extra caution when I messing around with it.
