Android device for easy rooting for ethernet connection

Hello all you experienced andriod techies, I need your help. I need to find an android tablet that will be easy to root so that I can connect it to the internet via a USB to Ethernet adapter. (I CANNOT just connect a wireless a router so don't even suggest it. It's a xmas present for someone that's deploying to Afghanistan soon and won't have wifi and it's not allowed so that's a non-option.)

Also, please recommend postings or websites that explain how to root in such a way that backups are saved and the tablet can be reimaged and appear as non rooted if it ever needs to go back to the manufacturer. I've looked and I've seen posts saying this is possible but no where that explains how to do it.

AND if anyone can tell me how to get the ethernet to usb working once it's rooted that'd be AMAZING cause once again I've seen people say this is possible, but no one saying how to do it.

I'm a pretty capable person when it comes to technology and programming, but I've never owned an android device so any help at all would be awesome. This is for a man that's about to spend a year away defending our country so please help me provide him with a way to contact those of us he's going to miss here at home. Thanks!!!

Huh...I never tried tethering my tablet to anything via USB before. My phone has that feature, so I imagine the HTC tablet would have it (I can't think of it's name right now). Maybe the Asus transformer has that feature. I'll try with my Acer when I get home (won't be for, at least, 8 hours though). Making a note to self now.

I'm sorry to say that I couldn't get USB tethering to work on my Acer Tab. I could have just been doing something wrong. Maybe someone else can get it a solution.

But I hope that whoever is deploying to Afghanistan comes back safe and the best of luck to them.
