Android doesn't have search

When is android going to get a search mechanism that works?? This should be fundamental for any OS of any type.

Android's built in file search simply doesn't work. I've had a nexus one since january and it has never once worked right for me.

I have a couple of apps such as power search and astro. Neither of them are finding simple files on my SD card. However, I can find them immediately by connecting it to my computer and using the computer to search. I know the files are there.

It's feature, Google search is supposed to search in :
- web (it means google)
- applications
- some program which support it
- music files
- contacts
- messages

It's not intended to search for lost files. This can be done for example by Astro Filemanager.

Android search gives you the option to search through your music. That is what I use it for most of the time. It doesn't work. I search for a song with the word 'hold' in the file name, and it brings up 100 files, NONE of which have the word hold in the file name, and none of which are the actual file with the word 'hold' in the file name. I've tested this many, many times with many different files. It simply doesn't work. All I want to do is search for a music file to play. I can't. I have to manually thumb through the files to find the song i want to hear.

Astro file manager doesn't find the files either, and neither does Power Search.

The stock search app works just fine for me. Just tried searching for a few different music files abcd out worked perfectly fine.

ES file manager is working. It's finding all files containing the word I type, which is exactly what I want, and it's exactly how a real search tool should work..

When I do the same type of search in default android search SD card it brings up a list of 100 files or more, with the correct file containing the word I searched for halfway down the list in the midst of 100 other files that didn't have the search word anywhere in the file name or inside the file, or doesn't find it at all. Needless to say this is not how a search tool should work and I think anyone would consider the tool not working AT ALL under these circumstances. I'm not sure if I'm the only one with this problem, and that would seem pretty odd if that was the case. All I'm trying to do is search for an .mp3 file on my SD card with the word 'hold' in the file name, so I can find and listen to a song called 'hold on to me' for example. I'm not the only person that used my android phone to search for a particular file or mp3 to view or listen to. Tell me I'm not the only one with this problem

Anyway, android default search doesn't work at all for me. ES file manager is working perfectly so far.

While I get what you're saying but your example probably isn't the best. I mean, I generally don't search for my music. It's all tagged so I just browse using the tag data in my player(s). I've only performed a few searches with Astro but I don't recall having any problems finding whatever I needed to find.

I'll be honest, I am not sure what is going on for you, but search works wonderfully for me all the time. I have hundreds of music files and have never had issues. I also don't get random files showing up. Now, I am on an EVO with a custom ROM running sense, but the search function is completely stock.
