Android drives me mad

Hi,

I have spent all day trying to get my android devices backed up, and it has been driving me mad. As I could back up the phone, but I could not get the tablet backed up. And I never realised until after all of this just how important the different android versions are.

My phone is a Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 - Android version - 4.1.2

My tablet is a Samsung Tab 3 - Android version - 4.4.2

I am using a computer with Windows Vista 64 Bit Home Premium Edition, and I was using a version of Samsung Kies that I am unsure of the version level. As I un-installed it during the process of trying to get both items backed up. I even tried a System Restore before this, as I was unsure if I had a conflict in the programs somewhere.

It even got to the state where I even thought that the USB lead must be faulty, as I know that the phone works with it as well as the tablet, and both of them show up in Windows Explorer. But I believe that the tablet demands more power during the charging process, and this made me think that I had the wrong type of cable for the tablet. As no matter what I tried I could not get the version of Samsung Kies I had, to work with the tablet.

After un-installing the original Samsung Kies program, I did a search for a new version on the UK website, and I found an updated version - Samsung Kies 3 - Version 3.2.4.14113_3. So I installed I on my computer, connected the tablet via USB and I was surprised that I was able to finally back it up onto my computer. But when I connected the phone to the computer, I found that now I could not back it up

So now I was at the stage of being at the complete opposite of what I originally had, so I wondered if I could install the other version of Samsung Kies on my computer as well? So I tried it with the other Samsung Kies program - Version - 2.6.3.14123_5. And I was pleasantly surprised that both versions installed without any conflict, and the lower version can backup my phone. With the higher version also backing up my tablet.

This is the first time that i have come across a program like this, that has two different versions that work together without any conflicts.

I'm afraid it's not android driving you mad, it's Samsung software. ;)

Actually it's not too surprising that there is an old version which doesn't support the newer device, as it probably is the device rather than the android version which is the key here. I can only speculate that since the Ace 2 is almost 3 years old now they've decided they no longer need to support it in their latest Kies versions (all manufacturers will do this eventually). General android software such as ADB will work for older devices pretty much regardless of version (though some commands may not work on old devices), but that stuff isn't device-specific the way that manufacturer's software is.

Anyway, glad you found a solution :)

Samsung Kies 3 is not fit for Android backup to Windows PC

Summary: Backing up my phone or my tablet to PC by means of Samsung Kies 3 results in an infinite loop. FAIL

Configurations:
My tablet is Samsung - Galaxy Tab 3 P5210, running Android 4.4.2
My phone is Samsung Galaxy S4 Active, running Android 4.4.2
My PC is running Windows 8.1, with Samsung Kies 3 Version 3.2.14113_3.

Goals:
The contents of tablet and phone shall be backed up to PC in order to allow a quick restore in case e.g. of factory reset of phone or of tablet.

Observations:
Samsung Kies 3 provides an impressive Graphic User Interface concerning Backup and Restore. Up to 14 elements may be checked for backup, including apps, device settings and E-Mail settings.
However, when performing the backup, Kies 3 gets stuck on some individual elements or gets in an infinite loop. Error message: device not responding.
Backup, even when selecting only one such individual element, seems not to be possible.
Examples: E-Mail-settings, device internal settings.

I have the impression that the Samsung Kies 3 version 3.2.14113_3 has been released without proper testing.
I'm curious to read if I'm the only one unhappy with Kies 3.
Regards, David

The same has been said about every version of Kies.

Symbian Nokia used the same software. Everyone was disgusted when Nokia switched to the Kies like manager.
I had a Nokia phone when Nokia switched. I bought a Samsung phone right after. The 2 desktop apps (Kies/Nokia) looked exactly the same.

Kies 3 works with Android devices running 4.3 or higher while Kies 2.6 works with older devices.

David, as for your issue make sure the phone/tablet is in MTP mode and try going to Tools>Reinstall Drivers in Kies as that can fix a lot of issues. Also if your phone is rooted or running a third party ROM that may also cause problems.
