Root Android Eris dead after rooting attempt - 3 little aliens

I tried installing evileris rom from my sd card.
Everything on the installation screen looked great...
I rebooted the phone, and all I immediately see is the three little aliens on skateboards...
I tried restoring from my backup, but I mish have backed something up incorrectly, because it can't find any backup.
Am I screwed?

Never mind, I fixed it! I simply had to read the rooting directions again.... I simply had to wipe factory data first.

Thanks for the follow-up. Evil Eris is quite old and there really are better rooted ROMs for the Eris which are more up to date and include software updates provided by HTC in March 2011.

Also, just to ask, which method did you use to root the phone?

I simply copied the evil rom to my sdcard using the sdk adb tool. I rebooted, wiped mem and then loaded the rom from the sd card.
My trackball appeared dead so I googled on that, as well. I found that there is an inherent issue with the board behind the trackball and followed a suggestion I found online which included plugging in a cable and wiggling around while using the trackball. I found that I need to put a finger behind the cable and pull slightly towards me to get the trackball to function.
I'm new to this and I didn't realize it was an old rom. What ROM do you prefer for the ERIS?

Well, you still haven't listed the method that you used to get root, but that's ok.

There's actually a better solution: a version of Amon_RA recovery by user Scary_Alien that allows you to use the keys as well as the trackball. See here:

A good first ROM is xtrSENSE5.0.1. It's very close to stock, except that it uses a technique that gives much more space for user apps and data. Of course, it's also overclocked a bit. But it also has all of the changes made by HTC since the original 2.1 build was released (there have been two updates since then.)

Steps to install should be similar to EvilEris:

- restart in Recovery
- Backup/Restore menu
- Nand nackup
- Main menu
- Wipe menu
- Wipe data/factory reset
- Wipe Dalvik cache
- Main menu
- Flash a zip from SD Card
- choose xtrSENSE5.0.1.zip
- restart phone

If you do not like xtrSENSE for some reason, you can use the Backup/restore menu to Nand restore the backup that you made above, and it will bring your phone right back to Evil Eris.

I'm so sorry that I can't answer your question about the method I used to gain root.
It has been such a great struggle to get to where I am with the unit, that I'm unsure what process actually did the "rooting". I'm not sure if I've done anything other than changing permissions on a few files and installing the new OS. (chmod, etc) Perhaps if you listed a couple methods, it would jog my memory? Sorry... I'm still nieve to all of this!
I saw the trackball fix a while back, but had problems figuring out the gscript execution, but I'm learning as I move forward.
I think my first backup failed. I say this because I tried to restore from NAND when my system locked up with those three micheviousl aliens but it was reported on the screen that the system couldn't find particular files so I'll need to be sure that I make a proper "nand" backup, if that is proper terminology?
