Help Android File Transfer - Too many pics causes problems?

Does Android File Transfer have a file limit after which it crashes? Mine quit working after I've exceeded about 2k pics in my Camera folder. It has worked flawlessly on my Mac OSX Mavericks for months earlier this year, then I went on vacation a couple times and brought back 1000s more pics. AFT started giving me intermittent problems and then the problems became permanent after my 3rd trip. It connects, attempts to read my files (displays that file tree window) and as soon as it populates the window with folders, it errors out saying Can't connect to device's storage. My screen is unlocked all throughout the process. It worked OK a month ago. Now with 3k pics in my camera folder, no go at all. Have not been able to transfer anything for weeks even though I changed absolutely nothing in my setup. Google search yielded nothing useful.
