How do I associate rich text files with polaris office?

I would like to associate rich text files with polaris office such that when I select an rtf file with astro, polaris office is invoked and directed to the file. I'm currently given the option to "complete action using": cool reader, file editor. I've read many posts that talk about clearing "launch by default" items and also requirements for applications to indicate what file types they can handle but I've been unable to establish the association. I've also experimented with es file explorer and found a different set of applications and problems.

Is there a central user-editable map between file extensions and applications?

No.

If you select a .rtf file with Astro then in the context menu, for choosing a reader, should be also a check box with something like "Set as default app"

This is the way to associate a file type to a reader/editor
