Help Android for under £225?

I'm looking for a new phone and would appreciate some suggestions.

My Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 battery died on me, and instead of replacing it with the same I'd rather get a different phone. Not only do I not want to go through the same experience, but I hated the customer support of Alcatel (around 6 weeks later, still not got back in touch with me), and the phone was never really updated. Though now after my search I'm struggling to find another phone with decent reviews and it's making me question whether or not I should just get the same phone...

My budget originally was £200, but I can push it up a bit higher.

I want a phone that's at least 16 GB that I can use for everyday usage, so including apps (and 3D games), web browsing etc.

Lots of phones can do that. What are your other requirements or preferences? Screen size? Removable storage? How important are updates to you? And an important question: does it have to be a new phone, or is second-hand OK?

No bigger than 5"5 for screen size. Updates are reasonably important, my last phone updated maybe twice in the time I had it which was very disappointing as there were issues that should have been fixed. I would like to be able to use a microSD if the phone is only 16GB too.

As for second hand....well I'd rather a new phone, because I want to be sure I have a warranty behind me too. The thought of buying a phone that someone else had, in not as good condition, is off-putting.
