Android - Gmail contact sync

Can anyone please clarify for me what are the difference between 2 below options in Android system to backup contacts ?
- Sync Contact
- Sync Gmail

Sync Contact: copied (overwritten ???) all contacts FROM gmail account TO phone
Sync Gmail: did nothing (?) or I didnt noticed

What should I do to synchronized contact FROM my phone TO gmail account ? (by synchronize I mean add changes that are in my phone but are not in gmail)

Sync contacts = make contacts in Gmail and on the phone the same.
Sync mail = make mail in Gmail account and on phone the same.

If you have the phone set to to sync contacts automatically, the changes made to phone contacts are auto-uploaded to your Gmail account. And changes made to Gmail contacts on a computer will automagically appear on the phone. IOW make the changes anyway handy at the time - phone, computer - and everything automatically stays 'in sync'.

Ok, then I am interested only with Contacts and I dont want to make anything automatically.

1. When I press Sync Contacts on phone it will copy contacts FROM my Gmail TO my phone. Does it mean overwrite contact in my phone ?

2. Still not clear how to send Phone Contacts to Gmail

Sync is not copy. WHen you say sync, it will check which contacts have new information and it will use that. For example John's contact details on Gmail are old, but the one on your phone is new. The one on Gmail will be the one edited. Basically, the newly edited ones stay, the old ones are replaced if there is new data.

As for syncing, its already automatic unless you disabled contact syncing, and you arent saving your contacts to Gmail on your phone.

2. Still not clear how to send Phone Contacts to Gmail

1. To sync manually only go to 'Settings - Account settings & sync' and uncheck 'Auto-sync'.

2. When you sync added and/or changed contact entries are 'synced' i.e. made the same. Contacts on the phone are only overwritten to the extent of any changes that have been made. If the last change in Gmail contacts was made by computer, those changes will be on the phone when you sync. If they were made on the phone last, they will be uploaded to Gmail contacts.

3. To send phone contacts to Gmail, just 'sync'. See #2.
