This is a snipet of an online conversation I was having and wanted to share the thought for more feedback.

"Long as the program auto codes for apple it might be useful to look at but id personally never take the time to learn to program for them ;)

Android is the Microsoft of the cell phone world. The novelty of the proprietary apple system where every device is a locked clone only works with flip phones and MP3 players, once they go smart and into the PC realm of use we all know people soon want more choices then what color ;)

Dunno why apple still thinks that could work. 5 years back they should of let others build their version of an iphone and the world would be full of apple cell phones, not android. Apple is still so hardware driven, always trying to control the hardware, still never learning why Microsoft rules the world. And now Android ;)"
 
but MS cell phone deal is like OS2 Warp to little to late ;)

lunix is only back end kings of the world, the gen public all bows to MS for PC, Android for cell.
 
Ok, sorry to pick, but I'm missing your point.

Both Apple and Microsoft are closed. You were seeming to compare Android to Apple using Microsoft, yeah?

Yes, you could / can get Microsoft on more hardware, but it's still closed and they tried as hard as Apple to cut out competition, there was even a huge anti-trust suit.

Android dominates like Microsoft dominates?

Only in numbers, but unlike Microsoft, Android did it by being free and open, so the comparison ends at numbers in my mind.
 
Microsoft is not the OS of choice on my PCs, More because of it's near hegemony means I sometimes have to use MS because the software ain't available for Linux/won't work in wine.
Some timings for you (From grub to login screen):

Linux (PCLOS with Enlightenment DE): 20-30 seconds

Win7: 50 secs - 1 minute.

Login to USEABLE desktop
Linux: 15 seconds
Win7 :3 minutes

Quad core Phenom II @ 3.3GHz/8GB Crucial RAM @ 1600 MHz, 1GB HDD (7400rpm)

as for Apple, what caused Adam to be thrown out of Eden?
 
one of the dumbest thing ever to care about, boot time. sorry, less its 5mins long, relax.

as if that makes any difference, if you have such a demand for instant access, don't shut it off, why servers and business stuff last forever, not that it cost more, cause its never shut off, those ubar tiny thin micro pathways of metal only have so many heat cycles they can take. Why home PC have a higher failure rate, they shut them on and off 20 times a day afraid its gonna hurt it to run like a car, then gripe when it takes a min to boot up as you want to post that you burnt your toast and its looks like Nixon on facebook right away.
 
How about: Microsoft is to Apple as Android is to... Apple. But that’s where the similarities end.

I certainly care about boot time, especially when I want to get started with the first lessons in the morning. Pull my Linux laptop out of the bag, turn on, 20-25 seconds later it's ready. Waiting 3-4 minutes for Windows to become usable and ready, well that's 10% of the total lesson time, and an eternity while I'm waiting for it so I can get started, in front of 70-80 students.

Some of these so called smart TVs I find irksome as well, with their embedded OS prolonged boot-up times. In the old days I waited for a TV's valves/vacuum tubes to warm up, now I wait even longer for a modern "smart" TV to give me a picture. :rolleyes:

BTW my Android tablet is not much better. If I've not used it for a day or so, it powers off and shuts down. I've got to sit there staring at a green robot for 2-3 minutes, before I can do anything with it.
 
^ why I never turn my stuff off, tablets, laptop, computers, cell phone, all have extera external cooling and a power source close by.

I do it #1 with new items for a stress test, if they last 6mo like that, it will last 10 years.

TBH I wouldn't turn my cellphone off. But on the other hand my laptop and tablet. if I leave them on standby, they shut-down and turn themselves off anyway after a few hours. And have to be booted from cold. That's unless I leave them plugged in all the time, which is not always convenient. This is one reason why I use Linux on my laptop, because I like the fast start-up in the morning. Rather than waiting a few minutes for Windows to boot.

Home things like TVs and desktop computers, I'll certainly turn off and unplug them when I'm not there, when the house is unoccupied. Simply to avoid an unnecessary fire hazard. Annyong though when my "smart" TV takes 2-3 minutes to boot :rolleyes: when all I want to watch is the news.
 
There are actually quite a few similarities between MS v Apple on PCs and Google v Apple on phones in so far as Apple briefly dominated both markets, could have owned them completely, but then lost out, arguably for similar reasons.

In the case of PCs, IBM/Microsoft took market dominance from Apple by allowing people to build compatible hardware, under license, that ran the MS operating system while Apple insisted on complete control which included building all compatible hardware (this was relaxed later after Jobs was tossed out - he re-implemented as soon as he came back - but it was already way too late) and charging premium prices for everything.

Similarly, Google allowed phones that run Android to be built by anyone. It also allowed people to move the hardware down market. Apple hasn't. And won't.

Obviously, the situations are not identical, but there are enough similarities for the comparison to make total sense.

One key difference is that, this time around, Apple are not just hanging in, they're making the bulk of the profits and have grown their business almost exponentially, even while losing market share. That definitely wasn't the case with PCs. It also won't be the case much longer as the market is close to saturation - hence the 40% drop in Apple shares in the last 3 months.
 
How about android is the android of the mobile device world. Do we need to draw comparisons?

Tetley Tea is the android of the hot beverage world.
 
I tend to associate Twinings with over-priced, posh teas - like your fruit or herbal things - and Tetley with your basic builders brew.

Which would make Twinings = Apple and Tetley = Android.

Problem is: I like Twinings and I hate Apple.

What to do??!!
 
Try a cup of their English Breakfast or Earl Grey, that might cure that (although the way they market, I can see your point). And all of the varieties - that's HTC. Maybe Tetley is more like Samsung.

I'm not a tea drinker myself. Tetley to me is a "Cheap" brand. Twinings is what my Fiancee drinks (When she has run out of a special blend I get her)
