Android netbook new user

Hi, I just bought an augen netbook with Android 2.1 on it. I have never used android before, and would like to learn more. I run various linux distro's on my home and laptop computer, so thought Android would be a snap. Wrong, it is enough different that I am a newbie again. It seems more like a cousin to linux than a brother. Course that is just day one impression.

The documentation on my netbook doesn't address anything remotely "under the hood". How do I get to a command line?

I have ethernet up, but still no wireless. Was able to download a terminal program, so will play with that when I have time.
