Root Android newbie...can I root to 2.3 or 2.2?

Ok guys/gals at last I gave up my BB after 7 yrs and moved on to Android..

So I have the Captivate and would lie to Root it for obvious reasons..now can I root it to Gingerbread (Android 2.3)?? or stay with Froyo 2.2?
If I can upgrade to 2.3 where can I get the root files..

Rooting simply gives you read/write access to hidden parts of the phone, nothing to do with froyo/gingerbread. If you want froyo look start reading the xda forums.

Here's the ROM that I have right now: [ROM]Cognition v2.3b7 - xda-developers

Here's where you can find many other custom ROMs: Captivate Android Development - xda-developers

What you need to do to install these on your phone is first root it. Then install ROM manager app, then make a backup using that app. Next you'll need to "flash" the ROM using the same app.
