does android os geo tagging (while taking photos with xperia t2 ultra) automatically activates gps ?

How else would it know where you are in order to geo tag?

my question is whether explicit activation of GPS is required, or the camera function(enable geotag) does activation of GPS automatically

Depends on the app. Third party apps would require you to turn on GPS manually since third party access to toggle radios need root. The stock app may or may not have this feature (I don't have a Sony so can't test). Why not just test it, or leave the GPS on? Turning it off and leaving it on has no difference in battery usage anyway.
