Help Android OS update downloads no longer automatic?

Is it correct that Android OS update are no longer automatic?

It seems that way when I go to Settings>About Device on my Galaxy S6. as there is no option to set it to manual - is that correct?

Possibly they set it to automatic update only, to try to ensure that all their devices are fully upto date, Which could be because of the Note7 recall fiasco, where they did force the 60% charge, repeated nag screen update.

Is your phone locked or unlocked? I ask this because this kind of issue is most common on unlocked devices (those being devices which can work with any SIM card from any service provider). Usually on these devices, OS updates need to be downloaded manually using manufacture-released software via PC. So in your Galaxy S6's case, if it is unlocked and you're not receiving auto-updates from your carrier, you'd need to download Samsung KIES onto your PC and see if there are any available updates from there.

An alternative option if you're located in the US (not sure if there's an international equiv to this, please correct me if I'm wrong) is to take your device to a Best Buy. Most Best Buy's have Samsung Experience Centers where you can get your device manually updated to the latest build by a Samsung rep. It might be more out of the way for you than doing it yourself at home, but it's a sure-fire way of making sure your device is up-to-date.

In my experience of unlocked devices (the only sort I ever buy) they notify you when there is an update to download. All but one of my devices also have an option to automatically download the update (which I turn off - I prefer to choose when I do this myself), but the one that doesn't is also my only Samsung device. So it's likely this depends on the manufacturer rather than being an "Android" feature (as is often the case).

Thanks for the replies. My phone is locked to the O2 network in the UK. They told me that all Android devices no longer download OS updates automatically. I am going to call Samsung to check this/
