Android OS updates

I'm a long time iPhone user and I just purchased the SG3 a few weeks ago. The one thing I liked about Apple is the iOS updates. You always get the latest technology on older devices. So that brings me to my question, does Android phones get OS updates that often? I know Jelly Bean comes out for the SG3 next month, but since Samsung often comes up with new phones every few months, will I be left behind in a year or two with an old OS?

I'm within my 30 window to return this phone and get the iPhone 5, but I really want to keep this phone so I want to make sure I ask all the questions that are important to me.

Welcome, sorry about that outburst. (thread cleaned)

It's true, there's far less lag from when Apple announces updates until they deliver than with Android.

However, Android tends to be ahead on operating system features anyway, so at the very minimum, that part levels out.

Android releases a major update about once a year, your carrier and Samsung will release service updates usually more often, on an independent schedule from Android.

That's the typical practice here.
