Android Pay cannot be used

I have a Samsung Galaxy S 5 running Lollipop. It's rooted, but otherwise stock. I recently tried to set up and use the new Android Pay app to see what it was all about, but it won't let me finish locking in a credit or debit card. I keep getting the following error:

"Android Pay cannot be used
Google is unable to verify that your device or the software running on it is Android compatible"

I've read some indications that Android Pay may be automatically disabled if the phone is rooted...is that accurate? If so, is there any way around that obstacle? I haven't been able to find much about this online, and most of it is in the context of other devices so I'm not sure if it still holds true for the S5.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I suspect that would be because when a phone is rooted, the carrier cannot verify the veracity of the code on the phone.
The financial folks are desperately trying to keep their systems clean and free of being hacked, and they can't do that on software that has not been vetted by themselves.

Follow up on this.

I just now installed Android Pay, and when it was about finished up, it "found my debit card info" and the only way it could have done that was because I once installed google wallet and then uninstalled it because it is useless in my town.

However, tonight, I noticed that Banc corp is going to provide us with an invisible "credit card number" that resides in the "cloud" and no personal info is retained in that.

so, I thought "okay, give it a try".

the only thing I had to do, was provide my current expiration date and CVC code. the old one expired.

I noticed that Walgreen's is listed as using the new terminals, and also McDonald's.

Yesterday at Home Depot, they now have a new NFC terminal that when you use a CHASE CC/Debit card, it requires you to insert that card in the terminal and leave it there until the transaction is totally completed. 1st time I ever witnessed that happening.

So, for the OP of this thread, I would hazard a guess that since your phone is "rooted" it is no longer a "high security device" and Android Pay will not work on it.

it is midnight, so it will be a day or three before I get to try out my new NFC payment system.
In my little town of about 1,000 souls, there aren't any fancy POS terminals.
they are all the very ancient Slide and Sign your name type.
