I think it just depends on the apps you install. Try not to install the ones that require access to your contact list and you should be find

Thank you for taking the time to write out this info. So I can expect to see some of your work in the market place then?

Gotta add to the love in. Getting my new Hero in a week, completely new to Android. Although this entire forum has been amazingly helpful, this post is by far the MOST helpful I have found. Thank you again for adding greatly to my new Android knowledge.

Does anyone knows why the "evernote" application need access to my "personal information"?? It has no related "feature" to need this.

As many have said before me, thank you very much for taking the time to put this together. The Evo is my first Android device and had I not come across this I probably would've mindlessly downloaded anything I saw that looked interesting without paying attention. Now, when I find something I like in the market I check the ratings/comments, then come to this thread and see what all of it means before downloading. Again, thank you!

Hi I have a question about the Wikitude application.
It requires this permission:
Services that cost you money
make phone calls
I have no idea why this application should make any phone calls. So is it a safe application, or not?

Awesome post :)

So 'prevent phone from sleeping' will drain my battery :(

SUCKS, just installed an update for 3g watchdog which required that :( I really like/need that app.

As a new android owner who has been stung in the past by the old, "enter your phone number for your IQ test results" scam. I thank you. Not so sure I should post that I EPIC FAILED said IQ test, since I didn't see the 9.99 charge coming until after I'd hit enter. :D
P.T. Barnum quotes come to mind.
Again, thanks

Well, there are many things you could do just to be safe, like downloading anti-virus material, or just staying away from ads and things like that. Downloading files from unknown sources can be a cause too.
