Android phone cameras

I have a question about cameras in android phones. Now that we see a crop of pretty decent hardware but why the camera performance is far from great? Any idea? I doubt its the hardware, most likely the software issue.

My brother sent me a picture of a document, using iPhone 4S, because he did not have an option to scan at that moment. The quality was amazing. The pictures that he shoots are also pretty good (and he is one of the worst shooters). Although I am not a professional photographer, my photography acumen is LOT better than his but my HTC One X doesn't give me the results. I have tried a handful of apps but probably I did not check the right ones.

So all you experts here, can you please clear up my confusion? Is it the hardware or the software or both on our android devices is crappier than iPhones?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure about the OneX, but Samsung Notes and S series have been producing the same quality or even better than iPhones of the same generation. The main difference however is that iPhone software tend to increase color saturation and decrease detail to make the pictures more vibrant. On the other hand, saturation on Android phones tend to be lower in order to preserve more detail, hence the pictures taken with an iPhone may be prettier to look at, but quality and amount of resolved detail on a Galaxy S or Note phone is usually better. You can achieve iPhone like vibrancy by adjusting settings on the camera.
