Android-phone for selfmade gps navigation

hey,

i'm thinking of buying an andoid phone because i have minor programing skills and it would be cool to code my own apps.

so iam only interested in the gps feature and probably in the processor.

i want to save some gps cords and build my own offroad navigation system. atm its nearly finished. but how accurate are they?

and are there big differences in the accuracy if you compare different smartphones ?

what smartphone would you recommend me ?

i found the samsung s2 galaxy for 150€

Smartphones aren't really made to be standalone GPS units. They use a combination of mobile data towers and GPS to determine your location.

This proves to be both inaccurate, and very slow to reload. Buy a regular GPS instead of a smartphone for that price.

Plus, the GPS won't help you off-road as it only has streets programmed into it.

i think the GPS radios in phones are as good as the ones in GPS devices.

it is just that the phone does so much more.. while doing GPS services too and eats the battery more quickly.

the GPS in my HTC phone is good within 20-5 ft. same as my GPS device.

i do hear a lot of issues with Samsung GPS radios.. they are not as quick to find the initial location.

You need a good view of the sky with any cell GPS really. My GPS works pretty much anywhere, but if my Inspire doesn't have a clear view of the sky, it won't pick up the GPS.

my HTC evo and hero.. do fine inside as outside...

they may have issues if i am deep inside a big building... would that not be the same with GPS devices too?

The regular GPS that you buy for a car are useless offroad. Also, try getting a good signal with the cell phone GPS, don't forget you need a data connection to download the image of the map.

I'm sure they have things like off-road GPS, try Google.

If you don't need the maps, then what do you need the phone for?

If you need just the coordinates or something, you can get $100 GPS for trails from Dick's Sporting Goods.

i just want to save the gps cords to my smartphone and paint these cords on a map (eg googlemap) than i want to calculate the time between the two points. for example if u set a point on your running route and another point 500m in front of you. my programm will calcualte the time, speed etc. but this data have to be acurate otherwise its pretty useless. so i thought of buying a smarthphone + a extern gps.
