Android phone not displaying MMS?

A friend sent me a message today containing a picture, and instead of getting the message I got a link directing me to my phone providers website, where I had to log in to view his text and the picture. Is there a reason that this happens, have I got a setting disabled incorrectly?

What did he send you and what program did he use? That does not sound normal at all.

Have you ever had this happen before?

Who is your phone provider?

I'm with o2, he just sent a standard mms message from his iphone 4 I believe. I've got all my internet settings set to off, gps and the likes so they don't activate themselves and remain on constantly.

I am using a Nexus in the USA on t-mobile and if I have mobile data turned off I will not get a new message warning for an incoming MMS. But when I open the messaging app, I will see a download message and any text sent with the message. But hitting download on the picture will do nothing for me even if I turn on mobile data at this point.

Similar to what you are experiencing, but not the same. Perhaps you need mobile data turned on?

Does having mobile data turned on use your monthly data allowance then, as that's pretty bad if so. It should cost the person sending, not me to receive.

With such a case the free app 'Save MMS' might help showing you the picture :)

You might ask your provider for the settings of MMS for your phone.
You might not have included MMS with your contract.

I don't have a data contract with t-mobile. I use wi-fi for most of my needs. But here is what is interesting. I have unlimited text and MMS. But my MMS only works with mobile data on.

So, what I do is I turn on mobile data at home or work. There, my wifi handles the data that gmail, chrome, facebook, etc use. And I can receive MMS via mobile data. I get no data charges this way as mobile data is being used for MMS only. Then when I leave home I turn off mobile data. If I leave mobile data on when I leave or turn it on while away from wifi, the gmail, etc programs will use the mobile data and I get charged. (All of this turning on and off for my benefit is done via tasker settings I created.)

Of course your contract with your carrier will differ on how data is handled, etc..

What Harry2 is referring to above is your APN settings. Your carrier will have these for you.
