I would venture to say any Android phone works well with Maps and the Navigation app. I have a D2 and a Droid Charge they work equally well with Maps. Neither phone has ever locked up while using the apps.

So shop phones for other features you want and expect Maps and Navigation to work well in any of them.

i think you need to give us some more detail...
as to where you might be traveling...

the real problem is: data access.
for all the needed info.. you need data.
if you are going off your carrier's grid.. then you got issues..
google maps can cache some info for you, but it is limiting..

then there is battery life...
will you be in your car and access to a power??

then there is screen size... bigger is better for maps/navigation

GPS is always available because it is from satellites..

I agree, it more of a network consideration than an individual phone other than screen factors (size, quality etc.)

Well, don't buy an HTC Inspire unless you're looking to spend hours rooting, flashing, etc. I've only just now gotten my GPS to function reliably.

thanks friends, here are the details from my side...

mostly i travel in south india, espcially most of the places in tamilnadu.
also couple of places in AP and karnataka, i mean the tourist spots in south india.

recently i found that my fried tried with nokia and ovi was quite good.

but i dont think nothing can beat google maps.

so i more concern abt GPS navigation usings google maps which android is the best stuff for using it.

i beleive the mobile should have a good processor and ram to avoid hanging issues.

while using in car, i can have the charger connected as navigation sucks battery power which is a known case.

i dont want to waste money in buying a standalone navigator box for 10 - 13k that too the maps which is not efficient in finding the best path or direction.

thanks again

i dont know the google map's info in your area...

but from what you asked.. any newer (recently released) android phone should meet your needs. some have posted small issues with samsung's gps functions

dan,
thanks for your reply, regarding google maps, the coverage is really good which i tried with couple of mobiles.
my concern was the speed. would be great if you can suggest some good models which has processor speed.even if it bit older model, i dont have issues in buying it.
thanks

anything with Daul-core is great...

I have a very old (1.5 yrs) HTC EVO 4G.. single core at 1ghz... and it works with google maps just great..

current models that I would like... HTC Sensation.. EVO 3D... Samsung Galaxy S2... and other similar spec phones.
