I strongly recommend the following book:

Android for Programmers: An App-Driven Approach (Deitel Developer Series)

If you already know Java, you will be able to start developing applications quite easily.

This book is good not only for novices, but also for intermediates who want to improve their knowledge of Android best practices and APIs.
