Root android rooting

this is going to sound quite stupid lol but can someone give me some examples of the benefits of rooting my phone? I have a Galaxy S1 and would like to change some of the ways it functions.

On a seperate, perhaps even more stupid note, could someone explain what gingerbread is and if it available for my phone?

Okay. If you root, your phone you will have the ability to do anything. And I mean anything. You will be able to overclock it. And delete apps that came with the phone. Also you will be able to get a recovery system that you can use just in case you delete something you shouldn't have. This is a LG Optimus M forum though. To ask people who have more experience with your phone you should ask questions in the Galaxy S1 forum.
