Android sat nav

Do i need my wifi on to use my sat nav on my phone . If so what is the point as you won't always have a wifi signal .. .:)

Your Sat Nav should use your data connection to operate. Google Maps does a great job with navigation, but does require a data connection to work. You can pre-download some map tiles and establish a route prior to disconnecting from WiFi, but once you disconnect you are stuck to what you have downloaded unless you use data. An alternative to this is an app like CoPilot (and there are several others) that actually saves the maps and POI's to your device and no data connection is required. If you are concerned about data usage, this gives you an alternative. CoPilot is my favorite and it works very well. The downside to an app like CoPilot is that you have to choose a map to store on your device, which does eat up some real estate. CoPilot is a paid app, but for the United States is very reasonable for what it does.

Hope this helps,

I been having that same problem with google maps I do not have data connection and try to use gps but it is useless. How do you do that tile thing which save direction? I would rather have the map function with gps so if I miss a turn I could recalculate but the app request data connection.

The app needs data to download the maps and recalculation is done online. You'd have to buy one of the apps that allows complete offline use, like CoPilot.

The earlier versions of the app allow more direction and use of all features when not connected to data but the new upgrades kill that an now as soon you open it says data connection needed.

In mine (I just tested it) it gives me the "data connection required" message, and the proceeds to load the precached maps for the area.

You where never able to use "all the features" without data. In particular you were never able to start route navigation or directions. Once you've started a route toy can complete it without data (assuming you don't miss a turn, the GPS doesn't decide you missed a turn or the GPS losses signal entirely). There are many other features to Google maps that just need data to work.

Try Navfree. It is free. You can download maps for free on wifi (by country or state). It then works with your GPS. No data connection is required while you navigate.

I've used this myself as well. However, I am not completely satisfied with its accuracy and search capabilities. It is free though and as long as you need a navigation app that does not require a data connection, this one is adequate.
