Help [Android] Show data usage on home screen; Automate enabling of USB tethering

Hello,

I got a new Xiaomi phone, and would like to know if there is a way to…
1. Show data usage since the last reset on the home screen so I know how much I have left at a glance
2. Automate enabling USB tethering after I plug it in

Thank you.

It sounds like you’re asking about how Xiaomi phones can show mobile data usage since the last reset on the device. Let me break it down clearly:

Xiaomi Data Usage Tracking

  • Built-in feature: Xiaomi phones (running MIUI) have a Data Usage section in Settings.
  • Reset cycle: You can set a billing cycle reset date (e.g., the 1st of each month). This lets the phone show how much data has been used since the last reset.
  • Steps to check:
    1. Go to Settings → SIM cards & mobile networks → Data usage.
    2. Tap Data usage stats.
    3. You’ll see usage since the last reset, and you can configure the reset date under Data usage settings.
  • Shortcut widget: Some Xiaomi phones also allow adding a data usage widget to the home screen, so you can see usage at a glance.
  • Automation: If you want it to reset automatically each month, set the cycle date. If you want manual resets, you can clear usage stats in the same menu.

Extra Options

  • Third-party apps: If MIUI’s built-in tracker feels limited, apps like My Data Manager or GlassWire can show daily resets and more detailed breakdowns.
  • Automation (advanced): With tools like Tasker, you can script resets or even automate tethering when plugging in USB (which matches your earlier interest in automation).

AI…

"Shortcut widget: Some Xiaomi phones also allow adding a data usage widget to the home screen, so you can see usage at a glance.". It doesn't say how to do this.

On the Xiaomi Redmi Note 14, no widget is listed to show data usage on the home screen.
