Android sounds

Hi All,

I'm quite new to Android and abysmally ignorant of most of it. How do I find out what a sound means and where it comes from? My Tab 7a is constantly making noises at me and I have no idea what they mean.

Hi Ray, and welcome to Android Forums!

Yep, Android has lots of sounds... and lots of sounds for each app. Each sound should be accompanied by a notification up in the pull-down notification shade. As new sounds come in, look to see what they are. You can always turn off notifications, or adjust what things you want to be notified of. I hope this helps.

Thanks Chief, I'll look for that next time. So much to know.

Ok, I see how that works. Now, how do I home in on a sound and change it? I keep getting this 'do-do DOO do-do-do' notification sound that really bugs me. Is there a library of all sounds somewhere complete with meanings? Mind, if you can change them, then I guess not.

Oh, the do-do DOO do-do-do one? Yeah, that one bugs me too!

Not really: I have no clue what you're talking about.

:D

The best advice I can give you is go through your apps, go into their Settings and Notifications to see what's notifying you of what conditions. You can also go to the phone's Settings -- Notifications and see which apps are set to notify you. While the Android /system partition does maintain a library of app sounds, it's just a library of sounds and not associated with any app. That won't really do you any good. GOOD LUCK!

Ha HA! But that's the point: how does one discuss these noises? If somewhere in that pull down notification it said: "Noise #34125: Your mother in law is arriving." Then I could post here: "Guys, I hate noise #34125, where does it come from and how do I change it? Oh, and does Android have some app that will keep my mother in law away?" A library of system sound would sure be nice.

Which library of system sounds? Samsung phones have their own unique system notification sounds, as do say Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo phones, etc.

I have a Samsung phone myself, a Note20 Ultra, and I've set all app notifications to silent, except the ones I want to hear, like WeChat, QQ, WhatsApp, Email, SMS, etc.

That figgers. Nuts, yes, not an Android problem per se, so it's Samsung who should provide the library. Still, Android might ... well, no, Samsung would have to provide the ID number for the sound, wouldn't they? So Android is off the hook. Thanks.

It's in Android/data/media/audio and all the sounds are in .ogg files. Of course, each user app will have its own library of sounds... the only way to narrow it down is when you get the sound, pull down the notification shade to see what app just notified you. Then you'll have an idea of what sounds go to what app; and whether you can silence that notification. For exampled, you'd probably want to enable not only "mother in law arriving" but also "mother in law leaving her house for yours" - to give you extra time to prepare for her arrival
