Android Status Bar Icons

One of my apps is using an airplane type icon in the status bar whenever
my phone is roaming (which happens a lot in my area :-)
It is separate from the Airplane Mode icon (and slightly different).
Pulling down the notification bar, it then says Roaming, Enjoy your trip!

How do I find which app is generating the icon?
For that matter, it would be good for all of us to learn how to determine
which apps generate which icons?

All ideas and suggestions are welcome.
Thanks in advance
Bob

p.s.
although new to this forum, I'm an experienced Android user

I think it's aggressive advertising, known as AirPush and similar.

The app which had created that spam might be still on your phone ... recently installed or updated.
To find that culprit app install an AirPush detector like
Lookout Ad Network Detector

Lookout blog, release of Ad Network Detector
... Since last year, we've seen mobile ad networks adopt increasingly aggressive methods of ad delivery. At Lookout, we've been particularly watchful of ad networks that are capable of pushing out-of-app ads to the default Android notification bar, placing generically designed icons on the mobile desktop, and changing browser settings, like bookmarks or homepage ...

AirPush detectors you might use additional ...

I appreciate your reply and input Harry.
I did try the AdNetwork Detector etc with no results.

I have a feeling it's coming from a legit app -- perhaps some kind of
utility that is watching the quality of my cell connection -- or connected
with power / performance management. I just can't see to find which one.

Is there a way to see what app generated the icon to the Android Status Bar?

BTW I'm a big believer in LookOut... I've used it since day one, and
I recommend it to all my friends and colleagues.

Thanks

Bob

Read somewhere about a method to catch such a culprit app with a phone logger like aLogCat.
Maybe it's worth a try ...

Wait until the annoying info appears in you notification bar.
Start 'aLogcat' and then clear its log.
Then pull down the notification bar and tip on the icon of the annoying info.
Return quickly to aLogcat (via long press on the HOME button or with the multitasking button).
Now you should see the culprit app and following it the (?) SDK in the log's rows.

Good Luck

Harry

The logcat idea is pretty good. but I think you need root for that right? I think the lookout app would be the best one to use for non rooted phones. I have some of that too, but I know that it is GoSMS that is sending that airpush

Way to go Harry!
I think you may be right on that one. I'm researching it and for the
first time ever, I can't wait until I get into Roaming Mode :-)
Just curious, how did you figure that out?
Appreciate your help.

I have used Go SMS for a long time and never gotten an air push add from them. Also use add on detector and it comes up clean.

GoSMS does not airpush.so how is it that you know this?what program gave you that positive results that it pushes?

There is a roaming setting in Onavo data monitor that turns off that notification. Open app, open menu, open settings, Notifications, roaming.
