Android System burning battery

It happens only on occasion but today I took the phone of the charger late lastnight was on standby till 1 pm then by 8 was down to 25% after being around 90% when i woke it up. Android System is using 55% of the battery.... how?

Hmm. I remember a thread about this somewhere, will post the link if I can refind it.

Unfortunately, most of what was discovered was A) There are a couple causes. B) They are almost all various wakelock problems. C) A couple reported repeated messages in a log about a g-sensor.

I never saw a final resolution. They were having problems tracking it down as it seemed to come and go quite a lot.

I have not had this issue, so I can not comment directly.

Right off the bad, a couple guesses mainly from "C)" would be to calibrate your sensor, and disable all motion stuff you can find.

Theres also the usual: Check your apps. It could be a misbehaving app.

Any more information you can provide would be helpful. Things like what apps you have listed as running atm, their CPU times, other items battery usage, anything at all you can think of.

EDIT: Forgot to mention. The typical temporary fix was to shutdown, and start the system back up. Best to use Power Off, then power it back on vs. Reboot.

how do i manage my background processes? And for some reason maps is running, I never use maps, facebook has 3 services, for downloaded I have stock stuff fancy widgets, facebook, barometer, angry birds, words, temple run, logo quiz, fruit ninja,mint, obama vs romney, quick search, twitter and zedge

You can take screenshots on the SGS3 by either holding the power and home buttons for a couple seconds, or if the motion has not been disabled, swipe the side of your hand across the screen. This can help a lot with posting the details

For the CPU Total, is that 3 hours 1 minute 13 seconds? That would definitely be a sign of the problem if so.

Also: I should have been clearer, but the vast majority of things under "Running" Processes are NOT actively running. It's not as simple as "Running or Not", there are actually a ton of levels of activity, ranging from Cached ( loaded solely into memory, but not using any CPU time at all up to Foreground Process, where it is running full tilt. )

So, because most of those are not actively running...you don't need to worry about them. The OS should manage them. The key is if one of the apps has crashed, or is otherwise misbehaving ( such as stuck in a loop ), then it might indeed need us to step in.

Oh, and specifically for Maps: The entire set of location services are tied under maps. Absolutely anything at all needing location data will cause the maps services to load. The system should load it at boot because of how important it is. This is normal.

One good screen shot that would help is your Battery History Details. Under your settings, go to Battery. Click on the graph that says how long you have been on battery ( The one that shows the battery status over time. ) This includes a history of when your phone was awake, and when the screen was on. Normally this match up fairly closely...if instead we see screen off for say 5 hours, but a perfectly solid wake...something is definitely keeping your phone stuck awake and killing your battery.

I've had the same problem 3 times now. Once I rebooted the phone and once it stopped after charging it. The 3rd time is right now actually. I have the app Better Battery Stats, which I got from XDA and it shows it as being USB Storage Unmounter that's running. Not sure why that would be running like this. Check out my screen shots. If you notice in the first one, I barely had the screen on and during those times was not using the phone for anything with the screen off either.

Im seeing a fair bit of screen on time during the second half, where all the battery drain was. It also looks like youre on 4G with a fair bit of data usage.

What did you do during the second half there? You definitely do not appear to have a wakelock problem. A fair bit of 4G usage could just mean youre getting expected battery drain. over 18 hours isnt exactly bad for a smartphone, especially running 4G.

Under settings go to Data Usage. you can slide your finger on the graph to move 2 bars. Set them so the data only shows for today. You can then see what used the most data during that time, and see if anything unexpected shows up.

Check your sdcard. Any file system errors can cause a wakelock loop. Try turning on usb debugging under settings - > developer options. Even if theres a file system error causing a wakelock loop, this should stop the loop from continuing.

How much do you have the screen on? It looks like a fair bit all day, though pretty short each time. How many text messages are we talking? a dozen, a hundred, etc.

So, you would say you use very little data though, correct? If you can screenshot that data usage it would help. From what youre saying its pretty light usage, which shouldnt use quite that much. Im wondering if you have too much syncing going on.

sync every 4 hours I believe on a busy day hundreds of texts today it's not acting up, however it's awake more then the screen is on by a wide margin, screen is on auto

USB storage unmounter has an error which causes it to keep the system awake. You can reproduce this by plugging in a USB OTG cable and mounting a USB stick or external SD card with a USB reader. When you unmount by pulling down the notification bar and pressing Unmount, the unmounter will keep the phone awake. Solution is to reboot the phone OR unmount by going into settings, storage and unmount the USB there instead of from the notification bar. I think this 2nd solution works but have not tried it myself.

Ok no, this is not normal. This is one of the few GS3 problems. There seems to always be one common factor. Yes yes some people have mega battery drain from this or that, but if all stats are average except Android System, then it's most likely not a rogue app or screen brightness or GPS or anything obvious like that.

Check Wi-Fi settings - Advanced - Keep WiFi on during sleep = Never.

I played around with this issue A LOT, trying to cause it and/or fix it. There were no common denominators. Finally came across this suggestion, Android System hasn't passed 7% all week, usually staying around 4.2%. NOW battery life is normal. Trying to spread the word. Hope this helps.

I also had gsiff_daemon and tried both renaming and deleting it. Made no difference at all. So I'm not sure if it needs to be done in conjunction with this, but changing that wifi setting is what made the difference. Good luck.

I have this same problem from USB Unmount. Had the problem for the last few days of it being always Awake and shortening my battery life. Finally bought Better Battery Stats, and it's the USB Unmounter stuck on. And the problem did start after I connected a USB thumb drive to my phone via the USB OTG cable. I used the drop-down unmount, but looks like that doens't work, so I'll try the other way. Trying to make it 1 month between reboots, and I'm ever so close, lol!
