Android system cleanup old files?

Possibly a dumb question, but I was wondering if the Android OS benefits from an occasional cleanup of leftover files from general day-to-day use and installs/uninstalls? And if so, is there a recommended app or procedure for this?

You can tell from this question I'm an ol' Windows user.

Hi, I am also looking into this. can somebody enlight us on this? im looking into deleting some temporary files on the android system internal memory.

There is an app called Cache Cleaner NG which does just that (on both phone &/or SD, with schedule).
