Help Android tether VS iPhone tether question

So I have had my S3 for about 6 months now and I really do love it but boy is it making it rough on me. I just finished boxing it up to send it back for the 3rd time....2nd time with the same problem.

I use my S3 for tethering at work a lot and I am running into problems that I just can't seem to explain and I was hoping someone else may have had an opinion based on experience.

When I tether with my phone I get anywhere from 3-10mbps which for most online games is overkill. But what I also get with it is intermittent lag spikes and large pauses where the internet seems to die out all together for 5-10 seconds and then pop back to life. If I play Minecraft I will get disconnected every few minutes VS staying connected flawlessly for hours with the spare phone. I always just chalked this up to crappy cell reception and left it at that....until I had to send the phone out for repair the first time and I was forced to use my spare iPhone 4S while my S3 was out for repair. Now please don't get me wrong on this I am not trying to say hey guys iPhone is better because I came from iPhone and I won't go back , but when I tether from the iPhone all of these problems disappear :S .... the lag spikes don't happen anymore, I stay connected for 10 hours a day with no problems and I don't get dropped out of games at all.

So I guess the main question is does anyone else tether their S3 for a similar purpose and do they run into problems? I thought I had a solution awhile back by shutting off the LTE reception because I don't have LTE coverage here and it did get a little better but still problematic to say the least.

I really think I just ended up with a lemon and there is a hardware problem with my S3 and hopefully they will just give me a new one this time because I find it hard to believe that the tethering could just be this overall bad.....

Is it possible that 3G and HSPA+ coverage is just that different?
