Help Android Texting causing whole phone to Lag

Hi,
So recently my phone has started to do this strange thing where when i open up my texting app (I use handcent but the problem is still happening in the stock app) and stay in it for about 30 seconds, my whole texting app starts to lag and everything else in my phone lags like games and web surfing. I have the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and i would appreciate some help. Thanks!

This sounds as though it is an application causing the issue, to be honest the best course of action may be to perform a software update to resolve it.

Could also be the # of SMS/MMS you have saved on your phone. If it's ridiculously high, that might be lagging you down.
