Help Android to Android - Housecleaning Recommendations

In preparation for my new S3 coming on Monday, I want to prepare by cleaning up all my info, apps, SD card, etc. and I just want to hear some general advice on a workflow and recommendations.

What I am initially thinking:
1) Delete any apps on current device that I don't want to migrate to new phone
2) What is the best method of cleaning up duplicate contacts so I don't end up with a bunch of garbage or dupes showing up in new phone
3) SD card - I plan on using my 16GB card in my Droid X on the new phone. Seeing as I have a bunch of my apps installed (through Ginger Bread) on the SD card, how do I clean these up but still retain user settings, etc.?
4) SD card - can I just delete any unwanted images? When I install card in new phone it should recognize any images not deleted, correct?
5) I read in the FAQs here (I think) that I should ignore the Verizon back up and rely just on google syncing all contacts. Is this still recommended?
6) Is there anything else I need to be concerned with?

Again, I just want to keep the install as clean as possible without transferring all the crap apps and data I've accumulated over the past 2 years.

Any advice is appreciated!

This is what I usually do...

1) Copy the SD card contents to a PC.

2) Format the SD card.

3) After replacing the wiped SD card in the new phone, I will transfer pictures and music to the phone SD card directory. Don't worry about transferring apps.

I always use google sync for my contacts but you may want to check in gmail to see if all of your contacts are there.

After this go to the play store and re-install your apps that are attached to your account.
