Help Android version

Lurker
I need to update my version of Android in order to put 'SkyDemon' on my HTC desire HD. I am told the easiest way is via HTC sync. I have that on my PC, so I plugged my phone into the PC.
HTC sync on the computer says 'No device connected', but I know it is, because in 'My computer' it shows up on the 'H' drive with things that are on my phone.
I don't know anything I would want 'HTC sync' for apart from this, because I am very 'low-tech' and have no interest in computers as such, but I do need this navigation device, Skydemon, on my phone. Can anyone help, please? Thank you.

Hi stephen01, and welcome to AF :)

If you can see the SD card on the PC that means it's in USB mass storage mode, aka "disk drive" mode. That's why HTC Sync isn't able to connect to the phone. You need to take the phone out of that mode and put it in HTC Sync mode (from memory - I've not had HTC software on my Desire for 2.5 years now).

Having said that, I'm not sure myself that HTC Sync is actually going to solve this for you. If there were an official update for your phone wouldn't you have received an over the air notification (unless you have that turned off)?

More importantly, that app needs android 3.1 or higher, which means at least 4.0 for a phone (3.x was just for tablets). But I'm pretty sure that there was no official Android 4.0 update for the DHD. So you might need to do something a bit more techy to achieve this, i.e. use custom ROMs rather than an HTC update.

The best advice I can give is to ask in our Desire HD forum, because it's the people there who will know for sure and will be able to give you the best guidance on what your options are and how to procede.

Moved to the DHD Section. :)

As Hadron points out, there is no official Android 4.x update for the Desire HD, the latest Android version was 2.3.5 so your only option if you want SkyDemon is to root and install a custom ROM (even then though, it still might not be compatible).

Are there comparable apps you could use instead?

Many thanks. 'Skydemon' is supposed to be available for Android phones, but necessarily all of them. Mine came up not compatible, but according to Skydemon I should have version 3.2 or later. As I seemed to have version 2.3.5, I assumed that was the problem, but it probably goes deeper than that. Thank you very much for your help, though!

Thanks. I subscribe to Skydemon which is a brilliant navigation device for light aircraft. I have it on a PC and an IPAD, but they recently announced it was now available for Android phones. It looks to be in the 'too difficult' category for me, though. Your help much appreciated, though.

You hit the proverbial nail on the proverbial head so to speak. Just because it's for Android doesn't mean all Android VERSIONS.
I know you said you don't have a tech head and all your options require some sort of tech unless you buy a newer phone.

And welcome to the forums. :D
