Angry Birds-Coming To Android This Summer

I will buy it if it comes out very very soon. I am pretty defensive of the Android platform. I will buy gameloft games because they made at least some commitment to android. .

It's much more than 'some.' I just saw the first Samsung Galaxy S TV commercials last night. It shows off Asphalt 5 by Gameloft. Gameloft is a small company and the possibility of being on national TV spots is amazing. So here's the deal, game devs: Android OEMs want your games and they will promote you if you do your part.

Even though you have to go around the market. Angry birds is running out of time. If i feel like they have a real commitment to android then i wont have a commitment to them. A company that has made this much money from iphone platform has the ability to get the game out sooner. A high profile game like this would probably even get help from google themselves if they asked for it.

I have played it a few times. Its a cool game. But they better get it out soon.

I don't think they're just sitting on a winning lottery ticket and are scared to cash in. Obviously something is not going right, otherwise they'd have it out.

Why wouldn't they want to cash in on Android? The company has quite a few games, so I'm sure we're not their only concern.

For all you know, it's just one or two guys developing the game. It takes time and effort to port programs to other platforms. It's not like they're some huge company with manpower to spare. There's no deadline to meet. Enjoy it if it comes, or dismiss it if it doesn't. Talk of making a commitment sounds like an "all or nothing" ideal...

Look at the companies website. Rovio - Home. They are much bigger than 2 guys in the basement making games. They have developed many games for mobile platforms. Look at the company history. Look at some big titles they have developed. It's all on their site in the "Company" tab.

They claim to have over 30 game developers on staff a few years ago. This is porting a game that is already developed to another platform. Something lesser companies have figured out how to do. In fact they posted a video of the game running months ago on an android device.
Having a portion of your staff responsible for porting games to android is a commitment. If they wont take the platform seriously then i wont take them seriously. They can do what they feel is right. As will I.

They are most likely debugging that last 5%... they want to release something that is perfect and will get great ratings and climb to the top. This is the classic software juxtaposition: release something that is 95% good right now that people are demanding and deal with the complaints and problems on the fly (ahem, microsoft...) or take a little bit more time to iron out all the wrinkles and go a little past the allocated time and budget due to unforeseen issues. We shoot for perfection as well, but it seems like most mobile users just want something NOW even if it is not totally ready. The problem is that the rating system in the market is VERY unforgiving of giving people what they want when they want it. :-)

People wouldn't want it now if the devs didn't open their mouths about it. Now we know about it... and we want it now. Because android is desperate for some good apps. It's sad enough that every decent game on android is already out for iOS. I suppose I shouldn't talk... seeing as I'm a PC gamer and we get everything before MAC.

Just release it soon after you announce it, or you'll start pissing people off like me and tmaxey here.

Good points. I think showing a video of it running on an android device a few months ago and having it still not get released makes people wonder. I know i may sound like a conspiracy theorist with this one but i wouldnt put this idea past apple:......... I have heard that andry birds 2 is coming to the iphone soon. I know apple is being investigated for their practice of strong arming record labels into doing what they want by threatening them with not releasing their music in itunes if they dont do what apple says. I think the Justice Department is looking into them because of this. They threaten labels so the labels wont sign any good deals with amazon.com and a few others. Plus they recently got into it over ebooks on the ipad with price fixing ect. It wouldnt shock me to find out apple would use its leverage to hold up angry birds from being released for android until angry birds 2 is released on iphone in HD. I know it sounds crazy and i am not saying i believe it. But with money and business nothing shocks me anymore.

However, i saw they released Angry Birds on the N900 through the OVI store. So i guess the device no one bought took higher priority than android. How can a company allocate manpower to porting it to the N900 but keep android still waiting. Android is activating 170,000 phones per day! We have barely any good apps compared to the iphone (gaming wise). But Rovio wants to port Angry Birds to the N900? WTF?

BTW..... where is plants vs zombies already. Are we ever getting that one?

Well just like Rovio (Angry Birds) and ZodTTD (playstation emulator, n64 emulator), Popcap games said they would be bringing their games over to Android. I believe this was also months ago. You'd think we'd at least have Peggle and PvZ by now.

There are a few game developers out there that seem to have some sort of beef with android...Just look at gameloft

The sad thing is gameloft is actually one of the better developers. They may make us jumps through hoops to get their games and charge us more for them also, but at least they port some of their games over.

It looks like Hero of Sparta 2 is coming out next week for the iphone. That means we may get it next summer when iphone gets hero of sparta 3. haha.

I know the common perception is that developers cant make money on android. I have a theory as to why.

1st is the market is not as easy as iphone app store for finding the titles.

2nd is the 24 hour refund policy

3rd is the ability to load files not in the market (piracy)

4th is the many different level of android phones out. Why develop a game that the mytouch3g has no chance of running smoothly.

5th and maybe the biggest. Iphone has the itouch. My feeling is most games are bought by teens or kids on their itouches. I know several adults that own iPhones and not a single one is a gamer on the phone. But i have been out to eat several times and have seen kids playing games on their itouches. Smart phones are expensive because of the monthly data plan. So most people that can afford them are adults. Most adults dont spend much time playing video games. Especially on a 3inch screen with relatively poor touch controls.

I would speculate that the videos and tidbits the devs release are more geared to assure the massive amount of people requesting an android port that there is indeed a port in the works and not some conspiracy.

Lol, just saw that, Gameloft is the biggest company in the whole mobile industry, with an army of over 4000 employees (in 2008, maybe they are now 5k).http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gameloft
Revenue comparisons:
Gameloft $147 million
EA $4.2 billion
Samsung $173.4 billion
Gameloft is big by mobile standards but that is not enough to have national TV ad spots. Only Samsung can give them that. SGS is launching in 110 countries and 6 US carriers in the US. Unlike Google, they have physical service support presence in those countries.
If Samsung has its own app store, that means that any game that's on it can reach so many people and users wouldn't have to dig through thousands of crappy soundboards to get to those games.

Samsung has an app store (at least they had one in 2k6 called the Samsung Fun Club).
It's true that they have a big reach, the revenue was nearly the same as that from a single carrier, which was better than any efforts that other hardware companies did back in the days.

EA just bought Jamdat at an exorbitant price, that was all they did in the mobile field and that's why they are not as important on the plattform as on other ones.
In the mobile industry, no other mobile game company is as big as Gameloft. If you compare it to EA as a whole, then please use Ubisoft for comparison.

Samsung has 173Billion in revenue and they cant find a UI designer that can do anything better than the GalaxyS UI? Wow thats pretty disappointing when a smaller company like HTC can kick your butt with UI creations. That UI on GalaxyS is making the phone run like a G1 with a bad custom ROM loaded.

I know gaming is nice on Galaxy S. But 173 Billion and desires to take over the mobile world and they couldnt create a better UI than that.

Makes you wonder why these companies even bother putting a skin on android. I suppose it's for the less tech-savvy users who won't attempt rooting and flashing custom roms. I'm using Launcher Pro and CM6 on my EVO... and even though Sense UI is nice, it's such a resource hog. I love my setup :)

MotoBlur and TouchWiz are TERRIBLE though. These UIs should definitely be optional.

Anywho, sorry for derailing the topic even further. But I suppose there is no point in talking about angry birds anyway. At least not for another month or two.... sigh.

you're pretty spot on, imo. and it makes me sad panda

But do we really want kiddie games that you can beat in 24 hours? As long as gameloft can bring great games to android, I am not going to be too concerned if Stickracer or Doodle Army isn't ported to android.

The market is soon going to a 48 hour return policy which will make it even harder for developers. There are also a an unknown number of transactions that just get hung up, and apple also applies a LOT of pressure on the existing iPhone developers with hot products to NOT develop for Android. I think these are also contributing factors, but time will fix all of them!

Greetings. Long time lurker, first time poster. Was going to use the "Confirmed" thread for this but seems that was locked. :\

Angry Birds (RovioMobile) on Twitter

Rovio announced sign-ups for an Angry Birds for Android open beta on their Twitter channel this morning!

I'm super excited to see this, personally. The hardest thing about leaving my iPhone for my Droid X was losing Angry Birds.

Considering doing an open and quick beta test for the Android version to speed things up Angry Birds for Android

Just to be clear, we will contact people about the potential beta test through the mailing list at Angry Birds for Android

Good thing I signed up for that a long time ago, with both of my email addresses! Thanks for the heads-up!
